The following is a copy of an e-mail sent out to the students and parents of CROSSROADS regarding the recent election and other current events. A timely message for us all.
It’s good to have the campaign season behind us, but there is still a lot of discord in our community, in our places of work, and for some of us in our homes. The news is full of all kinds of noise. We have the economy bouncing up and down, terrorism and the rise of ISIS, the election of politicians, and civil unrest. In our own lives, we have our own distractions with family heartache, diseases and deaths of loved ones, unstable school and work situations, and all other manner of things that keep us up at night. It is in these times that I am reminded of Elijah in 1 Kings…
“Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.
And a voice said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (1 Kings 19:11-13)
Elijah was surrounded by chaos and sulking in his despair. He was being chased by everyone he knew and declared an enemy of the state. In the midst of all this, he found the voice of God in a still small voice. When times are tough and the noise is more than we can bare, sometimes we have to remember that God is not in the chaos; he whispers to us if we would only stop, be still and realize that He is God.
Be still, and know that I am God!
I will be honored by every nation.
I will be honored throughout the world. (Ps 46:10)
God reigns over all our concerns and the concerns of this nation. If we are looking towards Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, or Mickey Mouse to save us from our worries, our pains, and our enemies, then we have already lost. Joy and grace come through Christ and Christ alone. Let us make sure to remember during these unsettling times that none of the noise truly matters. All there is… is Christ.
